The Fifth Kingdom Bookshop

I hate to think how old this bookmark is — well over 30 years. I lived a few doors down on Harbord Street in Toronto at the time. The Fifth Kingdom is no longer there, but now, across the street, are two lovely used bookstores, a snack shop as well as the offices of my literary agent.

I love these tapestries, especially the dog-like eagerness on the face of the unicorn. My mother, decades and decades ago, bought me a set of coasters with these images on them at an open market in London, England, when we were there together. I treasure them.

I loved Cody's books, and was sad to see its demise in Berkeley this summer. (They closed before a scheduled author reading; the author, whose name I don't know, went ahead with his reading — on the sidewalk.) I spent many, many hours in the original Cody's on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley.
