New Age girl on a tree limb

Water Wings by Kristen den Hartog. Oh, so perfect.

Edward Gorey's people

On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan. (Not a great match.)

The Idea of Perfection by Kate Grenville. Perfect.

Medusa asleep

The Road, by Cormac McCarthy. An ideal match.

Girl frizzing

(U.S. tour, June 2008) This is one of a series of creative "Indie Bound" bookmarks.

Wink

I found this at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, California, while on my U.S. tour (June, 2008). When you tilt it, it winks:

How to draw a rectangle

I found this in Boulder, I think. (June, 2008)

The Fifth Kingdom Bookshop

I hate to think how old this bookmark is — well over 30 years. I lived a few doors down on Harbord Street in Toronto at the time. The Fifth Kingdom is no longer there, but now, across the street, are two lovely used bookstores, a snack shop as well as the offices of my literary agent.

Boarding pass

This was a bookmark I used while on tour in the U.S. for Mistress of the Sun in June, 2008.

Hunting and Gathering by Anna Gavalda

Pickle

This is a treasured bookmark, recently found appropriately tucked into a book on sexual practices of the Middle Ages.

Unicorn

"Tenture de la dame à la licorne" — Musée national du Moyen Age, Paris (October, 2008)

I love these tapestries, especially the dog-like eagerness on the face of the unicorn. My mother, decades and decades ago, bought me a set of coasters with these images on them at an open market in London, England, when we were there together. I treasure them.

Cody's Books

I loved Cody's books, and was sad to see its demise in Berkeley this summer. (They closed before a scheduled author reading; the author, whose name I don't know, went ahead with his reading — on the sidewalk.) I spent many, many hours in the original Cody's on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley.

Longhouse Bookshop

This was a gorgeous bookstore in Toronto — wood panelled, hushed, very old-world. RIP.

Moe's

Moe's bookstore in Berkeley. Thankfully still open, years after Moe's death. I'm overdue for a long peruse of their section on European history.
